MILKY THE CLOWN

MILKY THE CLOWN

Scarce footage of Milky the Clown (Clare Cummings) performing magic for a young Nancy Dykstra, the United Foundation torchlighter for 1963.

This footage was recorded at the WWJ studios and aired on WWJ, WJBK and WXYZ-TV. Nancy's family was given a 16mm kinescope copy, which is where this footage comes from, as at that time shows were not typically recorded to be saved.

Milky the Clown was a very popular children's television program in Detroit from 1950 to 1967. Magician Clare Cummings was selected to play Milky the Clown by a television producer who saw him working at the Hall Magic store in Detroit, Michigan. Milky the Clown was sponsored by the Twin Pines Dairy, who offered home delivery of milk.

He was a weekly fixture on Detroit television until 1964. When he retired from television he passed the Milky the Clown character to magician Karrell Fox, who continued with the show until 1967.

Clare Cummings died on October 31, 1994, on the anniversary of Houdini’s death. He donated many of his magic tricks and his costume to the American Museum of Magic in Marshall, Michigan, where they are on permanent display.
